There are five energy-use sectors, and the amounts—in quadrillion Btu (or quads)—of their primary energy consumption in 2022 were:
37.75
quads
electric power
27.47
quads
transportation
23.18
quads
industrial
7.11
quads
residential
4.90
quads
commercial
In 2022, the electric power sector accounted for about 96% of total U.S. utility-scale electricity generation, nearly all of which was sold to the other sectors. The transportation, industrial, residential, and commercial sectors are called end-use sectors because they consume primary energy and electricity produced by the electric power sector.
Energy end-use by each end-use sector in 2022 was:
27.50
quads
transportation
26.62
quads
industrial
12.30
quads
residential
9.58
