A carbon offset is a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, measured in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), that is generated by an organization or individual to compensate for their own greenhouse gas emissions.

Carbon offsets can be generated from a variety of sources, including:

  • Renewable energy projects, such as solar and wind farms
  • Forest conservation projects, such as tree planting and reforestation
  • Energy efficiency projects, such as improving insulation and lighting
  • Agriculture projects, such as reducing methane emissions from livestock

When an organization or individual purchases a carbon offset, they are essentially paying for someone else to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. This can help to mitigate the impact of their own emissions and contribute to the fight against climate change.

There are a number of different organizations that sell carbon offsets. When choosing an offset provider, it is important to do your research to ensure that the offsets are high quality and that the money is being used to fund legitimate projects.

Carbon offsets are not a perfect solution to climate change, but they can be a helpful tool for individuals and organizations that are looking to reduce their environmental impact.
